What is a freshwater farm plan?
A freshwater farm plan identifies practical on-farm actions that are aimed at helping improve waterways and overall water quality. The current Govt is reviewing requirements for what farms need to complete a plan, including farming activities across pastoral, arable, horticulture, and thresholds for size. Indications are that the revised regulations will be in place late 2025 and rollout through teh various regions of New Zealand starting early 2026. Find out more here.

“A big benefit for doing the plan is it’s good for helping farmers understand where the risks are on their farm. Another one is they realise a lot of the day-to-day things they are doing on their farm are good management practice and have an environmental benefit to their property.”
Peter Thomas
“It is easy and very simple to use and even someone who is technologically challenged could use the tool. That’s what I love about it.”
Alana Marriner
“We wanted a tool that was accepted by the Regional Council, was able to simplify plan preparation, and was user friendly for anyone that required access to the plan.”
Ben Howden
Really good to open your eyes to risks that are out there. You can think you have no risks, but going through the tool helps you to see the real picture.
